If I add a new category, the site is solid black in browser

    We have 192 categories on our site, most of which are subcategories or sub-subcategories of the main categories. One of the main categories currently has six subcategories, which were set up and added a few months ago with no problem. I went to add a seventh subcategory yesterday, and when I went to view the site to check that it was showing up in the menu, any page in the site was solid black in Chrome — no text, no images, just black filling the screen. So I tried Firefox, without logging into the Dashboard. Same thing. Deleted the new subcategory and all went back to normal. After trying a second time and having the same thing happen, I experimented by creating a subcategory of a different category, and the same thing happened.

    Can someone explain why I can’t add any more categories and how to fix this?

    Sorry. Honestly I didn’t know that and meant no harm. It was friendly in tone and not harassing. But won’t happen again now that I know. I hope someone does reply with a fix from the WooCommerce team. Which products would qualify me to get support for that issue?

    Hey @glazergallery,

    For your issue, my first suggestion would be to check for theme and plugin conflicts to see if that may be the issue. Another option would be to contact your host as this could be a memory issue on the site itself.

    Regarding paid support for the issue, when you purchase a theme or plugin from WooCommerce.com, paid support for WooCommerce core is something you will get access to with that purchase.

    I contacted the host and the tech there was able to help. Storage and plugins were not causing the issue. The problem was that debugging was turned on in wp-config.php. Changing the line < define(‘WP_DEBUG’, true); > from true to false fixed the issue. Why that should matter in terms of making it impossible to add more Categories seemed strange to the tech, but it worked, and I can once again add categories again without the whole site turning solid black. He did say that as a rule it is the best practice to have debug set to true only when actively debugging the site. On the other hand, it’s been set to “true” since July 2017 according to my records, so why it suddenly started acting up just two weeks ago, when no additional plugins or major changes were otherwise made, except for updating WooCommerce to 4.4, is puzzling.
