Illegal string offset 'position'

I am no longer able to rename the home tab or reorder the position of a item in the group menu.

I can enter a new name for the Home tab and it remains saved in the entry box but it does not change the name of the home tab.

The section where I am allowed to reorder the menu is simply not visible.

I get the following error warning:

Warning: Illegal string offset ‘position’ in /nas/content/staging/upwardpressure/wp-content/plugins/buddypress-groups-extras/views/front/extras_general.php on line 50

While the link refers to our staging environment, the same is happening on production.
I have tried turning of all other plugins and switched the theme, to no avail.
