I’m new HOW TO START

Get a host https://www.ads-software.com/hosting/ where the host offers a 1-click type install of WordPress. Bluehost is one example.

Another option is https://wordpress.com/ uses same great software but you don’t need to know anything much about hosting etc. They offer free blogs or you can have them host something like ourfamilystory.com for a small charge.

They do have terms of service but a family blog should not have a problem. I help a couple of friends with their family type blogs over there and so far it has been working well for them. You are also limited to ONLY about 90 nice themes vs/ the 1,000’s with www.ads-software.com self hosting.

Anyway – another option – AND if you decide you want to self host in the future the move is quite straight forward if you read the instructions.

i’m new too. choosing themes that will allow you to play around with them is tricky, if you don’t know programming language. out of all the themes that i’ve looked through, the one that is easiest to customize without programming knowledge is ahualthapa (spelling?). you don’t need to use the editor to change stuff around – you can use buttons that the “theme options” tab makes available to you.

trying any other theme will be REALLY frustrating.

I also found the book “WordPress for Dummies” (but she shows you some very advanced stuff also) very helpful.

I will look at this WP for Dummies and then …well will see I do not give up just like that ??

however I was always wonder how come that nobody create a templates where you lets say copy-add-insert-paste and you work there with columns, rows, adding text, picture, video,… It could be “prepared” by other “programs” but here person almost could not change “code”. Well maybe I’m a little bit “naive” ??

You can create “thumbnail galleries” where WordPress takes many photos and captions and organizes them into a grid and displays small pictures and then click on a small picture for a larger view – standard feature – there are also “Plug-in’s” that can help arrange and display pictures and some “Themes” are designed help you make a Photo-blog if most of your family stuff is pictures.

The thing to remember is that blogs are a tool for you to give out information on the web – WordPress is a tool to help you make a blog – many times we get too wrapped up in the “tool” and loose track of what we intended to do –

My suggestion is to make a list of what you want to do and what type of information you will be sharing (stories, pictures, etc) before you go very far –
