• I just started using WordPress and the themes dont seem to work as described in the tutorials. I’ve read help topics on this subject and NOTHING makes any sense to me, nor will it work. If I cant figure out this simple stuff, what chance do I have at actually using this product?

  • You’re going to have to give us more than that to go on. What are you trying to accomplish? What steps have you taken? What results do you get? What is your default theme and which one are you wanting to use?

Im trying to set up a website to blog and share photos about my life and the trips I take around the world.
I loaded wordpress (I think, it runs online?)
Ive viewed wordpress 101 videos and uploaded some photos to my media library.
I selected “twenty thirteen” to use but nothing showed up so I loaded “Panaroma” and some others but nothing shows up like the videos say it should.

oh, I pressed the “press this when you’re ready to… publish? whatever” and it went away but nothing else happened…
when i go to “visit site” it just says “under construction…etc.”

im not sure what a “default theme” is, but nothing shows up on the left window, just the Customizing controls on the right, which seem to work but nothing changes when i do anything.

Take a deep breath: what is the URL to your site and what theme are you trying to use?

With some more information someone may be able to assist you here. ??

when i go to “visit site” it just says “under construction…etc.”

This might be a clue. If you have a brand new web-hosting account and are just starting your blog, your web-host may have some files in your root directory to show the ‘under construction’ page until you get your site going. That can stop WP from doing its thing.

Log into your hosting account and use cPanel or whatever interface they have set up for you. If you have cPanel, look for File Manager and use that to view your site files. Hosting accounts can vary in their setup, but look in something like www, public, or public_html for your web files. In that directory, if there is a file called index.html, or home.html, rename it to something like index-old.html to temporarily stop it from being used. Now see if WP shows when you visit your blog.

If this seems like too much, ask your web host to do it for you. A good web host will be happy to help you get going.

    breathing…
    my site url is: sufihabib.com
found index.html and changed it to index-old.html to no effect. changed it back.

Thanks for the link. Yes, that is a page put up by your webhost until you get your site going, or linked to by your domain provider.

Have you pointed your domain name to your web-hosting account yet? If so, maybe it just hasn’t been enough time yet (usually a day or two) for the address to propagate.

I think the best thing for you to do is contact your web host and tell them where you’re at: that you set up a WP site and still have the Under-Construction page coming up. They’ll know just what you need.

the thing i dont understand is why the themes wont load in “live preview” mode.
the control settings box on the left is there but nothing in the big window on the right.

I don’t know enough about how live theme previews work under the hood, but I’m guessing it may be useful to have a fully functional WP site which it sounds like you don’t have yet. Sort that first or you’ll just be spinning your wheels. Get in touch with your host.

    @sufihabib as Bill mentioned:

Took a quick look and it appears that WordPress is installed. Try removing the index.html file and just keeping the index.php file.

Have you tried to deactivate all the plugins?

Bill: How do I get a “fully functional WP site” when I cant get WP to work in the first place?
My host (i page) just refers me back to WP… and to this forum.
Jose: at the risk of sounding clueless (I am!) how do i do that?
    removing the index.html from where?
    what plugins?

    Thread Starter sufihabib

    (@sufihabib)

Jose: there is only a index.php file and no index.html file (I think)

Dashboard > Plugins. From there you will see a list of plugins that are either active or inactive. Select all the ones that are active and deactivate them.

me thinks it’s weird to load an iframe that points to nosite01.domainparkingserver.net

I would try to get in contact with your hosting company once more.

the control settings box on the left is there but nothing in the big window on the right.

As Bill mentioned it does take time. Possible that when you are previewing you are getting that under construction page. No worries, things will be sorted out.

    (@sufihabib)

To my knowledge, no plugins have ever been installed, ever.
    iframe that points to nosite01.domainparkingserver.net?
