Image catalog crop position

the crop does not seem to have any effect on the catalog page

What you are noticing is the normal and default behavior. For Thumbnail cropping when you are choosing 1:1 - Images will be cropped into a square, by default it is picking up the middle portion as the image is quite long in shape.

Please note that when you are manually editing the thumbnail, you are actually editing the main image. This is because the two are not separate files. Upon saving it properly, you should see the effect on the main image itself.

I understand that you want the top portion of the images as thumbnails. As there is no inbuilt way to do that, I found some workarounds for you:
