Image Date back to text date

The theme I have has an image date and would like to revert it back to text date, i’ve edited the index.php file to put the dates back together < ?php the_time(‘D, M j’) ?> but it still wont go back. Instead of regular day,month,year text it just displays the date (basically it looks like the only the change i’ve made is made the image go away). In the style.css file i deleted the date.gif file but month and year wont show.
help is greatly appreciated!
