I had to make several corrections to the description of images in an existing gallery, as well as to the titles of galleries. But no matter what I try, these corrected versions are not correctly displayed on the website.

I tried deleting the galleries and adding them again.
    I tried different gallery styles.
I always emptied the caches in between.
    ….

I also tried to empty the picture cache in NextGen, but then I had to redo all the changes. So that was not a good idea.

I don’t know what else to do.

For some reason, the second language page (English) does display the corrected description (both of images and gallery titles) but not the first language (German). I am using Polylang as Plugin. However, the problem also exists on pages that do not yet have a second language page.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hello @faithdanceart,

    We are happy to help!
Could you please check Polylang’s settings?
Polylang allows including strings and translations to the whole site, and these options are available at Language > Strings translations.

It might be the case that the German translation for your image titles and descriptions are empty.

    Hello @gabyimagely ,
    thank you for the reply.

You were partly right – the translation strings were not empty, but they had the old descriptions, without the updates. Once I manually (!) changed them, at some point the next day (!) these were reflected on the website.

Now I tried to update another gallery translation (by adding corrections in the Polylang strings) and even after 24 hours the corrections are not yet visible on the Website.

Also, sometimes the corrections which I added in NextGen galleries (manage galleries) kept disappearing. But not in all cases. Like when I added the *** in 12 images in the same gallery (!) and saved it, in 6 cases the changes were gone the next time I looked and in 6 cases they were as supposed. Very strange!

Somewhere there is a problem. But where? and how to correct it?

Hi Faith, I’m not with Imagely, but I did have a similar problem on my site and it was a glitch with the caching. There are two common cache techniques in use, and sometimes one does it and sometimes the other. One cache is for the whole page, including the generated text that goes with said photo, etc. The other is more remote serving of compressed images. If I purge both caches, my updates go through without a hitch. Once “updated”, I can turn caching back on. I even had my hoster struggling to find a problem because their internal site is NOT cached, it overrides everything, so what the public was seeing was not what I was seeing when logged in, and what I was seeing was not what the ISP was seeing internally! I literally had to send screenshots to prove it wasn’t updating!

But once we realized it was just slow to update, it was clear it was a caching problem…don’t know if that will help, just offering a suggestion.

Thanks, @polywogg, I will test that after the next backup.

    P.S. to @gabyimagely
I just realised that NextGen galleries are not using the translation strings that Polylang provides. ??

    e.g.
both on the English and German page of https://www.juttabluehberger.at/de/themen-und-techniken/tanz/ the gallery displays the German text string, instead of displaying the English string on https://www.juttabluehberger.at/en/themes-and-techniques/dance/.

I noticed because the English text strings had the corrections I made several days ago (replacing by Faith Dance Art with by Jutta Blühberger), while the German text did not yet have them until now. I just adapted them.

    @gabyimagely

I did some more testing, including switching off the site cache. As a result I was able to see more quickly what is happening. (Thanks @polywogg)

Basically what became clear is that:
    a)
when I update image descriptions in NextGEN, these changed descriptions are transmitted only to one language – English – even though German is the main language in Polylang and on my website.

    b)
then I have to update the second language manually :-(,
but then NextGEN does not use the English language strings of Polylang – it always uses the German ones, even on the English pages. ??

This means I have to make all changes twice and still don’t have the correct description displayed. ??

    Hello @faithdanceart,

Please, if you have some time, we′d like to take a closer look. We may need to deactivate plugins and switch the theme while troubleshooting temporarily. Would you feel OK with that? If so, please send us a bug report here: https://www.imagely.com/report-bug, refer back to this forum thread and let them know Gaby referred you.

    Many Thanks.

    Hello @gabyimagely

I am never happy doing this troubleshooting at the live site. So, I created a test site. Before reporting the bug, I played around myself – with more freedom than when it is the live site.

It seems I solved the problem: after having corrected all image descriptions, I deleted all language strings that did not reflect these corrections (more than 1000). And suddenly everything worked fine.

I will be pointing the Polylang support to this string. Maybe between both supports you can figure out why there are so many redundant strings and also strings that would reflect corrections only in one language and not the other. (Despite me cleaning the string translation database several times and clearing the cache and switching off the off-site cache …)

Somewhere there is a problem between the two plugins (and not for the first time).

Thank you so much for letting us know.
We’ll have on eyes in any further reports of this particular issue.
    Many thanks!
