image file size increasing

  • Hello.

    I have seen a pretty reliable problem dealing with image sizes. I think it might have to do with thumbnail generation.

    I upload a file, cw1-drone-hero.jpg to my media library.
    The file size is 239KB at 1200 x 674 resolution.
    I notice it loads slowly.
    I look in a load chart of the wordpress page that the image is used in – and see that the browser is using a file called cw1-drone-hero-1000×500.jpg.
    The file size is 576KB.

    I see this with a whole lot of the images in my media library. The filename is not the same as what I added to the library and the file is larger. I can guess by the file name that wordpress is trying to create images that are resolution-specific to the browsers – but it should not grow the file size, correct?
