Unfortunately this is not possible in the free version.

But we have a new type of cart in the pro version that could be opened like an off canvas, please see this video.

The multi step checkout is in the making and will be released in future updates of the PRO version — hopefully this month.

And yes, onboarding into the pro is pretty smooth and your existing configuration won’t get lost — even with a production site.
