I have set up a store with sample data and I can see that when I add a product image it actually uploads 9 versions of the image. Can anyone let me know how best to utilise the 9 images?

I understand you are referring to WordPress generating multiple image sizes. The primary reason is to help with bandwidth savings, by utilizing the most appropriate size in a situation (the thumbnail size, instead of the full-size one, for example).

That said, feel free to go ahead with deactivating that functionality, with instructions that can be found when searching online for prevent wordpress from generating image sizes, for example.

I have checked online and I can’t find any options to stop this. I can see options for the 3 WordPress sizes, but nothing about the 13 additional images generated when I upload a product to WooCommerce.
