Image names changed and Images disappear from pages

  • For some reason, all the images hosted on my WP site (but not ones like Facebook logo hosted externally) disappeared.

    Investigating, I found that they were all still there in the library, but broken image boxes were where they should be on the blog.

    When I do a right-click on an image and choose ‘Open Image in Another Tab’ It gives a 404 with the address https://domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Imagename-150×150.jpg.jpg. But when I go to this image in my Media library the image is there with the filename https://domain.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Imagename.jpg.

    I’m not aware of making any change the would have triggered this, and it affects almost all my posts going back years. Is there any way to fix this without going back and editing every single post to re-insert the images?

    go to Settings ? Media and check if the media sizes are set

    When I go there, there are values for Small, Medium and Large at 150, 300 and 1024 square.

    “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions” and “Organise my uploads into month- and year-based folders” are both ticked.

    I’m pretty certain that I have never changed these settings. The error arose yesterday when I was experimenting with a couple of other plugins. It goes to almost all images in all posts, some of which haven’t been edited in years.

    Is there a fix?

    switch off all plugins which you were experimenting

    I have already removed them both, no effect. I’m not certain that they were the source of the problem, I just noticed it when I started previewing the site.

    Also, FYI I already had the latest WP installed and tried reinstalling without any effect.
