I’m finding EWWW Image Optimizer INCREASING all my image file sizes. I’m guessing this is because it’s changing them from 72 pixels/inch to 96 pixels/inch. I’d like to understand why. Is this something I have control over?

    Thanks.

You say it’s increasing all of your image file sizes? I have heard issues sometimes with certain types of PNGs (8bit), however there are checks in place that when the plugin optimizes a file, if it results in a larger file, it won’t do anything. In those cases, you can implement overrides to force it to create the larger version, but that would be something outside of the norm. Can you share an example image that you saw increase in size so I can test it? Preferably the original.

Now that I’ve had a chance to go back and test this more carefully, I think I was wrong. I can’t duplicate what I reported.

I think my observation probably was related to something done by WordPress, not EWWW. By default, WordPress reduces large images to 2560px in the largest dimension. It had done this with a number of images before I installed EWWW. Inspecting them, I now see that the “scaled” versions WordPress created, along with the thumbnails created from them, (a) have been changed from 72 pixels/inch to 96 pixels/inch and (b) have larger file sizes than the originals! So I suspect the behavior I accused EWW of is actually a WordPress issue.

Thanks for your help, and sorry about my erroneous report.

Ahh no worries! I’m glad you were able to figure it out!
