Image overlay image

Hi guys, i have been trying every way i can think to do this, I have a product and i want to display it as a basic one colour item, but give my viewers the option of changing the colours of two parts of the product, so i was thinking of having the base image and overlaying the image with pngs when a colour is picked, there will be around 40 colour otions. anyone got any suggestions
