Image path issue with Multisite and Roots

Is the folder really named assets?

Did you rename/move your wp-content/uploads folders?

What theme are you using?

I will note that assets is not a normal WordPress location for images, so if you have a theme/plugin forcing them to move, it may cause all sorts of havoc with Multisite. The proper place for your images is in your uploads folders, and any time plugins/themes move ’em around on their own, it’s a nightmare.

Yes, I’m using the Roots starter theme, which does modify the permalinks. It’s solidly written though and supposed to work with Multisite. Perhaps I should rely on the Roots forums for a fix here.

Yeeeaah I wouldn’t count on it :/ From what I understand, that’s just how Roots does things. Making it not friends with Multisite at all.

Roots dev here. Roots has used “media” as the upload folder for half a year now instead of “assets” so you’re probably using an older version. Feel free to change the upload folder to whatever you like or just use the WP default – changing it is just a recommendation that’s offered when you’re going through the theme activation.

retlehs – Any reason why you’ve moved the media upload folder at all? And have you tested this against Multisite and how it stores files?

I’m happy to say that a completely fresh re-install solved the problem. Something must have got messed up as I was converting an old theme install to multisite.
