I’m happy Media Library Assistant has helped me to create a thumbnail gallery page on my client’s site. It works well!

But I’ve encountered a problem upon uploading jpegs. ERROR pops up, with details simply reading “HTML error”. It appears that while the original image file does get saved to Media Library, none of the other sizes are generated (thumb, large, medium, small).

I’ve changed the default thumbnail size, could this be causing an issue?
I also have the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin, and that does not seem to work.

Thanks for the positive feedback and for your question. I have added a new “bulk edit” area for the Media/Add New screen and this may be an issue for you.

First, just to confirm, are you using the Media/Add New screen or are you using the “Upload Files” tab in the Media Manager popup Modal Window (the Add Media button on the Edit Post/Page screen)?

It would be very helpful if you could try three experiments and report your findings:

    1. Try uploading both ways, i.e., Media/Add New and the Post/Page “Add Media”/”Upload Files” tab. Is the problem limited to one of these two alternatives?
    2. Go to the Settings/Media Library Assistant General tab and scroll down to the “Media/Add New Enhancements” section. Uncheck the “Enable “bulk edit” area” box, then scroll to the bottom and click “Save Changes” to record the change. Does disabling this feature cure the problem?
    3. Go to the Plugins/Installed Plugins and deactivate Media Library Assistant. Does this cure the problem?

The results of your experiments will tell me a lot. Thanks for your help and your patience.

    Hi David,

    Thanks for the quick response.

    1. I tried both ways and got the error both ways. But I found out this time that it only comes up when uploading JPEGs and not PNGs or GIFs. My client will be uploading JPEGs.

    2. This did not cure the problem.

    3. Yes, the JPEGs uploaded just fine when I deactivated the plugin.

Let me know what you think

Thanks for responding with your results. I am not sure what is going on yet. If the problem occurs after experiment #2. it is probably not the new code.

It is very curious that JPEGs fail but PNGs do not – there’s nothing special in MLA except that JPEGs contain IPTC/EXIF meta data.

On the Settings/Media Library Assistant IPTC/EXIF tab have you checked “Enable IPTC/EXIF Mapping when adding new media” and/or “Enable IPTC/EXIF Mapping when updating media metadata”? There are similar checkboxes on the Custom Fields tab as well.

If any of the boxes are checked, could you try unchecking them to see if the problem persists?

You might also try deactivating Regenerate Thumbnails, if you haven’t done that already.

    Thanks!

No, the Enable IPTC/EXIF Mapping options are not checked on either tab.

I have tried deactivating Regenerating Thumbnails but the issue still persists. I’ll try deactivating other plugins.

Let me know if you have any other ideas?

I tested other plugins. These are the ones that produced the error (when activated alongside Media Library assistant)

    BWP Minify
    Cloudflare
    Google Analytics by Yoast

    I triple checked.

Sorry should also add that I’m still getting the error in Bulk Edit mode on the Add New tab. If I drag and drop in the main Library grid there is no error.

Thank you for the time you took to run the experiments I suggested and to selectively disable plugins to more narrowly define the problem.

I have installed and activated the three plugins you identified. Even with Better WordPress Minify, Cloudflare and Google Analytics by Yoast installed and active I cannot reproduce any of the issues you are experiencing. I also went to the Settings/Media tab and changed my thumbnail size to 256×256. I unchecked the “Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions” box to get proportional thumbnails.

I think the only way to make progress on this issue is to see it on your system. The “Cloudflare” plugin is asking for a domain name and API key, which of course I do not have. You could give me a temporary account on your system (I realize that may not be possible) or we could use a Skype or Google+ “screen share” session so I can see your screen while you demonstrate the problem.

If either of those alternatives interests you, give me your contact information and we can make an arrangement by e-mail. You can use the Contact Us page at our web site:

Regarding your comment “If I drag and drop in the main Library grid there is no error“, that makes sense because MLA does not add any code to the Media Grid uploading feature.

One other question occurs to me; is this a new problem, i.e., was your site working with an earlier MLA version and then broke with an update to version 2.02 (or 2.01)? I added several features in 2.01 and especially 2.02 that could be causing your issues. Reverting to an earlier version on a temporary basis might work until I can find and fix the problem.

Thank you for our understanding and your patience. I am open to any process you think would work for you.

    Hi David,

You are so helpful, I really appreciate your time.

It seems that my client has not encountered the errors when logged in as a different user, which has allowed them to upload all necessary jpegs so far.

I’ve been consumed with tending to other parts of the site and so haven’t spent much time troubleshooting. I have no problem creating a temporary account for you next week.

May I ask a more pressing off-topic question – to your knowledge is the “Photomosaic for WordPress” compatible with Media Library Assistant?

    (@dglingren)

Thanks for your progress report and your offer to work with me on this when your time permits.

I do not have any experience with “Photomosaic for WordPress“. I hope you understand that I cannot purchase premium plugins simply to provide MLA support for them.

If you encounter issues with the combination, check with their support team. I am happy to help if they can give me a copy of the plugin for my testing and debugging.

You may find that a free alternative such as “Tiled Gallery Carousel without Jetpack” may give you what you need.

Let me know how I can help.

It has been a month since my last post in this topic. Since I have not heard anything further from you regarding the issue I assume you have found a solution or workaround for it.

I am marking this topic resolved, but please update it if there is anything else I can do to help. Thanks for your interest in the plugin.
