Images always are not using SSL, even when browsing SSL site

For example, if we are using https://example.com, the images are still coming from https://example.com.
Therefore, many browsers give you an alert that there are unsafe parts of content on your page.
Many tools get around this by referencing photos either relatively, or doing //example.com which works and falls back to whichever you are using.
Is there a way to get this changed? Or am I missing a feature that lets me do this already?
