Images and Text not Changing

Another problem, different site. When I upgraded all my plugins, images and themes disappeared. When I uploaded my old theme, my site format returned minus the plug ins and images. Since one of my plug ins stored back ups, that was gone too.

This is very irritating. My host does not have a back up of my previous site because I was backing up daily and discarding previous backups, thinking I had a plug for that.

Is there any way to retrieve the old plug ins–at least a list of what they were?

How can I prevent this in the future?
