Images Attached to Post

I’m looking for a way to display the images that have been uploaded and attached to a post. Not necessarily included in a gallery or displayed in the post.
I’d also like a way to limit the number of images displayed.The idea here is that a user will create a new post, upload their images, and without creating a gallery or inserting images into the post, click the publish button.
I’m using WP Views to format the actual display of my posts, which allows me to have everything displayed the way I want it. Right now I’m using the stock WP gallery shortcode, and everything is fine there, but I want to limit the number of thumbnails that are displayed.
