By now I know I shouldn’t have done this but I got myself in a mess. First I moved an installation from a dev domain to a life domain with ftp a zip archive and expand in the new location (same hosting account). Next I changed the wp_options entries for home and site URL to the new site. Got online and it worked (so I thought). Next, I changed the media setting from month/year to OFF and noticed that the actual files were still in their original folders. (in the meantime, I learned that the settings change only affects where WP stores files from that point forward). However, since I thought something didn’t work as expected, I moved these files all directly into the ../uploads/ folder and deleted the month year folders. In the website some images linked still into the old location, but not to the uploads folder. So I went back into the DB and changed all wp_posts entries where the guid contained the old location with the month/year reference.
Still, WP cannot access the images. Some images are actually showing but its random where they are picked up from, old or new location, w or w/o month/year. Now I copied the image files back into the original places in the new location and turned month/year ON again w/o any different result.
The URL is https://www.fortvermilionlodgeboard.ca and the old location is https://fvelderlodge.beaverpc.ca

  • Hi bws999,

The good news is, the dev site is still working. ?? I’d recommend starting over (delete the live site ) and re-migrating using the ‘Moving Directories On Your Existing Server’ section in this guide:

    Good luck!

    Hello,

You can use “Velvet Blues Update URLs” plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/

to change all old website link with new ones. There’s even a 1 min tutorial to show you how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzI9quk29_s

Thank you for responding. I missed to describe a step I did in between. I created a new DB for the new location (in order to keep the original for test purposes). Then I dumped the content from the old to the new DB and changed the wp_config.php to reflect the new credentials. That’s why the old installation is still working. In the meantime I did work on furthering the new site, i.e. editing, adding, updating etc. which of course is not reflected in the old site.
In other words, your suggestion would wipe all that out. This option I considered myself already but feel it would be the last resort.
    Is there a way of
    A) knowing where the links between the various access points of WP and the media files are?
    and/or
    B) regenerating the connection between those “items”?

BTW, I did use the velvet Blues Update URLs plugin in an attempt to fix the DB. However, this option I found only after the switch of Month/Year setting and the manual DB update. So it found only one item. I also tried to re-establish the media folders (copied them back within the uploads folder to their original sub-folders). This time, the plugin didn’t find any item to fix.
