I created a test page to show the differences. The standard WP gallery has the proper color and saturation, while the NextGen gallery shifts the color and desaturation. I’ve tried tried using Adobe RGB and sRGB profiles with the color shifts remaining the same. Any suggestions?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • I am not sure which gallery (upper v lower) is which on your page. I would agree that there is a colour shift. This is most clearly seen in the macaw and in the foreground hand of the Perry image. One gallery is shifted more to red and less to blue than the other. That’s not going to be detectable in an essentially blue image like the balloons.

Browsers are renowned for colour shifts even if they say they are colour managed. All images put on the web should be in sRGB colour space and never in AdobeRGB or ProPhotoRGB. In theory, images with NO colour space should be interpreted as sRGB but that is where browsers tend to mess up.

I guess the question is whether either WP gallery or NextGen gallery is stripping the EXIF data and hence the colour space information. The only way to tell would be to save and examine an image being viewed in your browser, but at the moment all the images are protected from saving.

There are websites available to test your browser’s colour awareness. You might do that.

The upper is the NextGen gallery, the lower is the built-in WP gallery. The warmer color in the WP gallery is correct.

Since the color is different in the galleries within the same browser, I’m confident that it is not a browser issue, but a NextGen one.

Since both galleries are in the same color profile and appear differently, I m confident it is not a profile issue. Also, I’ve been using Adobe RGB on images for more than a decade with no issues before this. sRGB is a smaller space and Prophoto is a bigger space. No reason why the one in the middle should be an issue.

I guess the question is whether either WP gallery or NextGen gallery is stripping the EXIF data and hence the colour space information.

Here you are onto something. I was able to download both versions of the same image and the color space is stripped from the NextGen one. Good call. Since I am adding a section regarding color correction (my day job) color is really critical. Thanks for the idea to check that!
