    Hi there,

I was just wondering, does this plugin just handle the conversion to WebP only or is it also meant to swap out the images on the site too?

I’ve installed the plugin and it is converting images both on upload and I also converted all existing images too but when I create a page and add an image to it and then view the page it isn’t spitting out the JPG version of the image.

I checked using the developer inspector tools in Chrome and it’s stating it’s type as JPG and not WebP.

Do I therefore need another plugin which will actually swap out the images or am I missing something somewhere?

Many thanks for any help with this. If it makes any difference (not sure it does) I’m using Oxygen Builder on the site I’m creating.

Many thanks for any help with this and thankyou for an excellent plugin.

    Best wishes,

    Mark

    Hello,

    can you share your URL?

If plugin is activated, then everything should work.
Only case when JPG or PNG is loading original content instead WebP is when Webp is bigger (filesize) then original file – yes that can happen. But I would like to see your web firstly and then I can tell you more.

Okay now this is seriously weird!

I promise it wasn’t working yesterday and I thought it had something to do with my installing EWWW Image Optimiser as in that plugin there is a setting to create and serve WebP images as I had done this on another site with your plugin installed and so thought maybe your plugin was just creating the WebP images and then EWWW was then serving them.

To test I turned off EWWW and today one of the images on the page is now showing as a WebP image. Problem now though is that I deleted ALL the WebP images from the Uploads folder to test to see what would happen and when I refresh the page now It’s coming up as showing as being WebP type!

Really not sure why the one image is now showing as type WebP when there aren’t even any WebP images stored on the server anywhere now!

The link to the page is :

    https://www.livedworldcounselling.com/oxygen/images-to-webp/

This is just a test site to see how everything works but I’m truly stumped now as to why it’s still showing as being a WebP when none even exist on the server anywhere.

I made sure to use the don’t cache option in the Chrome Dev Inspector so fairly certain it’s hopefully not caching anything.

Currently the site has EWWW plugin deactivated and your plugin activated.

    Thank you.

You have probably cache issues. Mostly it’s some aggressive hosting cache mechanism.
Sometimes it’s not enough to clear WP cache and browser cache, but there are also some hosting cache.
Anyway, I don’t see any WebP now, so it’s probably you’ve deleted them.
Go to plugin settings and use Bulk convert to convert all images in uploads and themes folder and it should work… well… once your cache will be gone ??
Let me know when you regenerate all WebP images

    Hi Kubiq,

Thank you so much for the very fast answers, very much appreciated.

Actually now that you mention that the server (Siteground) does use CloudFlare so may well be that and I was seeing the cached JPGs before I had converted them probably.

Thanks for pointing that out to me.

One last thing I did notice is that I’d added one image as a background image to a section in Oxygen and noticed that image didn’t get displayed as a WebP image. The image was created as it was on the server but when the one image displayed as WebP that one wasn’t.

Could that just be a cache issue with CloudFlare again or does the plugin not handle background images?

    Many thanks,

WebP content is served on server level so it doesn’t matter if the image is used as a background or src, srcset or whatever.
Cloudflare has its own Webp convert and delivery mechanism, so you don’t need my plugin if you use cloudflare – just check your settings there

    Hi Kubiq.

Many thanks for that. Will check that out now although I believe it’s not turned on for this site. Will definitely check though.

    Thanks,

    Hi Kubiq,

I’ve just checked on CloudFlare and the site definitely doesn’t have any WebP creation going on as that is performed by their Polish app which costs extra and it’s not on this site.

I’ve just done some more testing and if it’s okay to link to a video in here I can show what’s going on.

If I activate the EWWW plugin (just activate not actually get it to create any images) then the images immediately get served out as WebP images (the images that your plugin created). If I turn EWWW back off again then I get JPGs delivered instead.

As you can see I’m not getting WebP images served at all until I turn on something like EWWW and use their option to serve up WebP images.

It’s all a little weird so not too sure what’s going on here?

    Many thanks,

EWWW has it’s own WebP mechanism, they probably change the URL directly in HTML, that’s why you can see that also filename has webp extension

My plugin will not change filename or extension or URL, it will only load content from WebP file if browser supports it ( everything except old Safari and IE )

So probably my delivery method will not work with Cloudflare and you need to use other method like this URL rewrites, or <picture> rewrites, so that means you should use that EWWW plugin.

CDN will require very specific setup to make this works… yes as you wrote it’s paid service on Cloudflare, or you need plugin that will change it directly in code, so unfortunately my plugin will not work in your setup
