Images distorted

Hi,
When I upload an image they are automatically distorted (they are getting resized to 283×283). When I change the size to the original size, everything is fine and nothing is distorted.
We just want to have the photo’s displayed normally, and not to big.. And not distorted ofcourse.
What can the problem be?
