Images dropped from tiled galleries

  • Hello. Jetpack seems to not be playing nicely with my theme. I’m afraid I don’t know if the issues started after a recent WP, theme, or plugin update, but it is centred around Jetpack.

    First, graphical elements on the front page were not loading, as seen here. (The little diagonal bit that makes the top part of the featured image disappear.) After de-activating Jetpack, it started working again. Re-activating does not seem to have broken it.

    However, the tiled galleries are not so lucky. The content is still present and can be seen in flashes as the gallery loads. Once its alignment is completed, however, some elements are not displayed. View here.

    Deactivating Jetpack in the latter case just means breaking the gallery, with the photos showing up crooked and crammed together. But they do all show. I re-installed WP 4.6.1, but nothing changed.

    The theme is Oblique.

    Any ideas? Thank you.

    Edit: it may be an issue with Photon. The first part is, anyway. Not yet sure about the second.

    Update: Having Photon off definitely seems to fix the front page issue, but galleries are still dropping various images.

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

    Jetpack’s Tiled Galleries use Photon to resize each one of the gallery images on the fly, thus creating the Tiled effect with images of the right size. For this to work, the CDN has to be able to download, optimize, and cache all your images images.

    What sometimes happens is that the original images are so slow to load that the CDN isn’t able to download them in less than 10 seconds. It’s often because the images are too large to be downloaded quickly.
    In other cases, an image hotlinking protection service may be blocking the CDN from downloading the images.

    Looking at your site, the images don’t appear to be that large, but they appear to load quite slowly. Is this your production server? Can you contact your hosting provider and ask them if there is any way to speed the delivery of static resources like images on your server?

    Until the problem is fixed, I’d recommend that you deactivate both Photon and the Tiled Galleries module.
