• I’ve been having the most hideous problems with images since installing early this morning. When I tried to upload a new image for a header, I simply got an http error, no other info, but the image turned up for cropping to size. When I tried to crop, and save and publish, the script went to a blank screen, no error message… and no header.

I’ve just now attempted an upload of a jpg to the site, which worked… but it didn’t attach to the post. When I tried to “add media” from the post page, nothing happened.

Its like theres some kind of disconnect between getting something chosen to upload and getting it actually to show. I thought earlier that it was the installatron install, so I did a manual install instead (after removing the first install) but that was of absolutely no help at all.

The only error I ever get, is that already mentioned… a big red ERROR! with http error underneath.

Could this be an error because of my hosting (never had problems last year and am feeling inclined to install an older WP in spite of any possible repercussions)

  • Hi Kyte,

Could you share some details like the name of your host? what server are is your website on, apache, IIS? what version of PHP is your server running? these things will help more experienced WordPress’ers help you, cause this sounds like a server configuration problem.

that sounds curious, this does sound like a problem your host might have to solve. its a good idea to send them an email about it.

It sounds like php display errors is turned off which would explain why you don’t get any other info, this is a server side setting that your host controls.

It could be possible that your host needs to upgrade its version of PHP or that perhaps it recently did upgrade and has to change a few settings to make all the features in WordPress work properly.

Thanks, Julian. I’m with Zuver.com.au. I was with them last year with whatever version of wordpress was available then, and had no issues at all. Its probably a hosting thing, but like others… I actually dont much like the changes in any case. WordPress has spoilt me for other options so sticking with it. Just want to say that change for its own sake (which is how it looks out here) is just a PITA.

I created a second post regarding errors I get when attempting to do a feature search for a new theme … I guess its a PHP issue on the host side and because I’m on cheap hosting, I can promise that no additional effort will be made to sort it. I’m doing manual uploading of themes.

Its an apache server, and I’m currently attempting to find the PHP version.

I used the phpinfo command in a script and found that its PHP Version 5.4.27.

There is a swag of other information there. Any chance of giving a clue about what might be disabled to cause this? maybe I can get them to enable it for me.

No sorry I can’t really help you from here, hopefully your host has a clue or maybe someone else around here will.

    Good luck ??

Thanks. I think I’m going to be giving up. Might have to resort to something less complex. Damn. I love wordpress ??

I dont know anything about them cause i haven’t used them yet, but iv been hearing good things about wpengine.com they are a web hosting company that focus primarily on WordPress sites. i doubt you would ever get any of these problems on their servers.

plus they have specialised WordPress support staff that would solve an issue like this quicksmart, a regular hosting company doesn’t necessarily have the best hosting environment for WordPress, some are better than others.

    I love WordPress too ??

Thanks. I really am financially challenged so I took the cheapest available option for a year to see if I want to persist, or if I will drop back to wordpress.com (where I already have a domain hosted)… and since I only organised it last night, I think its a bit premature for a change.

Oh ok, no worries most us know what you mean ??

If you only organised the domain name and hosting last night than the issue may be related to DNS propagation. I’m not a coder but i would guess that if your website has not fully propagated through the web yet, than as you use WordPress somethings will work and other things may not work because your computer simply can’t always find the website or make a connection. I have experienced this before during the time it takes a website to propagate fully (72 hours or more) the website is intermittently accessible and then not accessible, i’m guess that in your case you can access it but its not working properly yet. I could be completely wrong, but hopefully the problem just goes away in another day or 2.

I doubt that its anything to do with DNS propagation, I get the same errors when I use the IP address. I may try another install but right now am not hopeful that my hosting, and WordPress remain compatible. I’m 90% sure its something in the way my host has PHP set up, and something thats disallowed which means WP is now off the cards for me.

Before I decide on a different permanent solution, I’ll see if I can get any joy in the host’s own forums.

Yeah you’re right it probably is a hosting/php issue which means they are your best bet.

Hopefully your hosts support can shed some light on this too.

Good luck, sorry i cant do anything else.

No worries, Julian, I’m sure it will all be OK in the end. Sadly, the host doesnt have forums, only a facebook presence and having only deleted my facebook account on Saurday, I’m not about to revive it just so I can find out they dont do much on facebook either. I’ll send them a ticket.

Thanks for all your help, anyway, its appreciated ??

All fixed. They didnt tell me exactly what the issue was, but after I posted before, I installed some other scripts one of which was a flat file database (Nibbleblog) and I had no problems with that. So I went ahead and installed several different scripts. Anything dependent on mySQL failed, whereas flat files did not. So I was able to give them that info as well and it was fixed almost right away.

Good news, but what a pain, over the last 36 hours. I’m glad its just a hobby thing and not some work related site.

Hey that is really good to hear, im glad WordPress is working for you again. self hosted WordPress can be a bit tricky sometimes.

Generally i strongly recommend anyone im installing WordPress for professionally, like my recent work place, that they use a hosting company that is a advocate of WordPress and actively promotes its stability on their servers. for a business it ends up being more cost effective cause they have less problems.

WordPress started out as a hobby for me too, when it plays nice its fun to work with, its fun to make stuff with.

I’m always happy to help, you welcome and hope things are smooth sailing from here ??

don’t hesitate to post in the forums again if you need to ??

Well, here I am again, having installed and thinking Nibbleblog would be easier, found its shortcomings just too annoying, so reinstalled WordPress and the old image wont properly upload, or show in a post…. is back. So I dont think it can be the SQL stuff after all. I dont know what yesterday’s fellow did, but the current support person on the host has no idea.

I’ll keep plugging away at it, but it really is a PITA when I have had WP functioning perfectly well in older versions in the past, on the same host.
