• I’ve been having the most hideous problems with images since installing early this morning. When I tried to upload a new image for a header, I simply got an http error, no other info, but the image turned up for cropping to size. When I tried to crop, and save and publish, the script went to a blank screen, no error message… and no header.

I’ve just now attempted an upload of a jpg to the site, which worked… but it didn’t attach to the post. When I tried to “add media” from the post page, nothing happened.

Its like theres some kind of disconnect between getting something chosen to upload and getting it actually to show. I thought earlier that it was the installatron install, so I did a manual install instead (after removing the first install) but that was of absolutely no help at all.

The only error I ever get, is that already mentioned… a big red ERROR! with http error underneath.

Could this be an error because of my hosting (never had problems last year and am feeling inclined to install an older WP in spite of any possible repercussions)

  • Its hard to tell what the problem actually is. If everything that relies on MySQL is failing but flat database is not than this would sound like an MySQL problem. However you seem to be able to get WordPress going which means MySQL is working, but you still have issues in WordPress.

If you have no plugins installed and have not modified the WordPress code, and WordPress is connecting to the database properly, i can’t see why there would be an issue especially since you say WordPress has worked fine up until now.

Theres a lot more troubleshooting tips i could give you, but I just cant tell what your problem is and i dont want to send you on a wild goose chase since i’m not super advanced at WordPress so i might be missing something simple here.

Good luck with it ?? (p.s) id try installing WordPress in a new subdirectory and give it a brand new database. see if an entirely separate WordPress install has the same issues.

Just thought I would report back in, Julian, because you have been so helpful.

All of my issues with images have been sorted by simply UNchecking the box in media management which says to keep thumbnails proportional.

I’m gobsmacked that such a simple solution (one I have never used before, I have in the past always left that checked) should fix things. However… uploads work, images in posts work. I’ve posted my solution elsewhere, where people seem to be having the issue but so far nobody else has tried it. I’ve given up posting it (even did it as a separate post) because there have been new posts since and clearly, nobody searches (I didnt! OOPS!) It probably wont work for everyone, but it did for me ?? Pretty mad though.

Thanks for letting me know kyte,

that is curious solution that you found. oh well good work ??

    Hope others find it useful.

    happy WordPressing ??

I too am on WP 3.9 and just moved one of my sites to Zuver..

The site existed on a different provider and JPG/JPEG would upload in media library fine, just migrated it across and no JPG upload ability.. Just the HTML ERROR (PNG works fine but)

I went into the Media settings and unticked the Crop Thumbnail to exact dimensions, saved and now I can add in JPG files again through the media library…

From digging a bit deeper, it appears to be an issue to do with the ‘ImageMagick’ function wordpress uses to crop/create thumbnails, as it is only happening to me on this hosting provider, I’m assuming its a server setting/ ImageMagick version issue or something..

Thanks for info on the workaround for the time being, but I like having the thumbnails of images available and use jpg a bit still, so I’ve logged a ticket with Zuver and hopefully they can work out what’s going on, on their end…

Oh really?? I was told WP doesn’t use imagemagik. On Zuver, we do not have access to it. I don’t know why. I’ll send a ticket to the host, too.

[edit] On a second check of phpinfo… i find that imagemagik *is* active (it wasnt, last time I looked which is what prompted me to check how its used with WP, only to see that it wasnt.) Now I have no clue.

Just tried doing an unattached upload to the media directory, with that box checked, and got the following error… Its very confusing.

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

This error turns up when the script attempts to access media-new.php in the admin section.

Since there are no errors which make any sense at all in my cpanel log, I’m assuming the error goes deeper than that… I’m not that unhappy with how things are working without having square thumbnails… for now, anyway

should maybe looking at server setup for that problem, my guess is the php.ini file needs a bit of tweeking to suit wp, if you check and double check requirements for wp and then check everthing in php.ini file on server.
if you dont know how ask you host to do the checks and correct them
and be sure sure host does not have php.ini automatically reverting back every few days ( ive known at least one host to do that )

also saying a 404 so could be a permissions issue or a bad install on wp itself although im not convinced on that, im more for the server side setup being at fault

I’ll take a look and see if its something I can fix. The WP install itself should be fine. I think with two of us experiencing the same issue on the same host might indicate an issue at server level.

Bazza.. which server are you on? I’m on HULKHOGAN (ugh, who dreams these names up!)

i used to run support for a web script that was quite heavy on resources ( wont name it as its not wp ) but so many times people used cheap hosting and it crippled there sites to a point of giving in.

i always say in hosting you end up with what you pay for which is why i ended up setting up hosting myself with good levels of resources for many popular scripts at true affordable levels to combat these issues for people ( no its not an advert for my hosting as i wont even say the name so as i dont get accused of that ) im merely wanting to point out the issues faced by many especially with the here today gone tomorrow hosts and there are thousands of those around.

im pretty convinced your problem is with host and suspect they dont have the resources or setup in place adequately but good luck with it and hope you get it sort

Its not a cheap host in the way you are clearly thinking. lets call it budget. Its local, and its associated with a large hosting company here in australia. We don’t do without. Perhaps Bazza will be able to find out more, but for me, the fact that nothing is actually disabled in my phpinfo output suggests other issues which are not immediately obvious.

either way it dont really sound like an issue you can easily solve yourself kyte, i think its one for the host to resolve for you. get yourself a support ticket in and keep fingers crossed ??

already done, but I am happy with my workaround.

    Hi Kyte,

    Same issue on Zuver.

Your fix worked for me. Incredible and very frustrating.

I’ll be in touch with them.

Back again with the same issue. This time working on a site for a friend. I had completely forgotten this nonsense. Fortunately thumbnails aren’t going to be required at all, as the pages generally will be static, and I’m working on them at wordpress.com first, and will export/import to the “real” URL when completed.

Wish I had remembered, but no worries, will get it sorted once more.
