• I’m having an issue with the images on my blog. Before uploading them I have sized them to be 1200 pixels wide and under 250 kb. When I upload them into my media library on wordpress they are showing the correct dimensions. However, when I insert them full size into my blog post they are showing up much smaller.

Ex: one image is showing in my media library as 1200 × 803, but when inserted into the post at full size it is displaying as 924 x 618.

I do use the plug-ins short pixel and WP Rocket if you think those might be affecting my images. Though, I know with short pixel, the dimensions are displaying as the correct size in the media library after short pixel has optimized them.

I’m out of ideas, so I’d appreciate any insight.

Images can only be displayed up to the width available on the page. If you want to display your images at the 1200px width, you need the 1200px width available on your site where you want to display the image.

But the full width of the content column of your page, even on large screens, is ONLY 728px, as seen below.

    So if you have a 1200px-wide image…

    — Do you prefer your site to display the image at the 1200px intrinsic width, extending beyond the content column and overlapping the sidebar (or worse, pushing the sidebar down)?

    — Or would you rather prefer your site to serve the image at a lower width, containing it within the content column?

You probably want the latter case, which is what’s happening on your site.

Let’s look at one of your images, as an example.

Per your image settings in the post editor, the full “intrinsic” image dimension of 1200 x 803px is inserted into your post. But as the space to display the image is only 728px wide, your site (via the theme’s CSS) instructs the browser to render the image as 728 × 487 px.

Thank you for that explanation. So I guess my follow-up question is (Which I don’t know if you know the answer to this)… I’ve been told that for best image optimization, google, and future-proofing my photos, all images should be 1200 pixels wide. If my site is limiting how large they can actually be displayed at and won’t display at 1200 pixels wide in any case, will I get dinged by google? Or is there a way I can get my site/theme to widen?

Second follow-up question, if my images are dynamically changing size according to whatever screen they are displaying on. Shouldn’t they still show up on the back side of my blog post as the original size (i.e. 1200×803) and then just adjust their size on the front end? Because mine show up as 924×618 when I am in edit mode on the blog post and they are full size.

Sorry if this seems like a redundant question, I just want to make sure I am understanding fully.
