• I am having quite a few problems with my images. First I can not upload any images. I continually receive the error message.

Also in my media library none of the images show up. They are there as the square boxes with the image titles are there just the image itself does not show up, although the images in my media library do show up on my website.

Currently I am trying to upload an image to my slider. I’ve tried everything even adding the image with a URL and the image does not show up just the square box with the image title in it.

    Can anyone help?

With help from godaddy I was able to fix the issue. Thank you to those who attempted to help me here.

I’m having the same problem I can’t upload an image I always get this error: Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2013/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I am using XAMPP Apache has my server for now as I build my site. I will move it to a web host when I’m done. Right now I need some help on how I can fix this.

    Got it. (I hope).

rickhenry, mate, I’m afraid you’ll either have to learn this FTP/777 stuff or get someone to do it for you. In two weeks with WordPress, this is the third time I’ve had to lift the bonnet and tinker with the carburettor.

OK, I gave wp-content permissions 777. Still, when trying to upload a .JPG to use on a page, I got: The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2013/07.

I was using Set Featured Image on the Edit Page screen. The site is hosted commercially using Apache. Same story if I use the media library facilities.

So I tried creating all those directories manually, and uploaded the image I wanted using FTP. Upload success, but the file still didn’t appear in the media library.

OK, desperation: the whole directory chain from wp-content to 07 has permissions 777. Lo and behold, my image appears and I can use it.

Now, WP gurus: this has happened before and will happen again until the root cause is fixed. Can we have this on the bug fix list and get it sorted? Thanks.

Update: I have to leave 777 permissions on all those directories, or it stops working again. Not totally cool with this, so alternative fixes very welcome.

Check with your host about the file ownership. If the web server is running as one userid and your writing files as another then the web server will not be able to save to those directories without that 777.

That’s a very unsafe configuration especially on a shared host. Speak with your host provider as there may be a step you’ve left out or a misconfiguration on you account.

    Thanks ESMI,

Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

This did the trick for me after having spent many days looking for an answer. I tried them in the order you listed. 777 did the trick. when i changed back to 755, bathed breath….everything was good.

    Many thanks again.
