    Without any reply, I found my own solution by coming back to version 1.9.13, and all is back to normal. At least, the images can be viewed.

    @abcod – I would suspect another issues aside from the clear image cache option causing this to happen. I would suggest looking at your other active plugins to see if there may be a conflict with those the next time you update to the current version of NextGEN Gallery.
