• Hi, I am new to these forums, but have searched and cannot find the answer I am looking for so hope someone clever can help. I do my website myself and know enough but not enough to get myself out of trouble. My website has suddenly stopped showing the images. I don’t recall doing anything at all, although I probably updated the software and then did not check to see if it had any effect.

    Can anyone advise how to get the images to connect up again with the image files?

    Thank you in advance

    Checking one image on your About page, can you use FTP or the File Manager tool in the hosting control panel to confirm that https://www.astridharrisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/DSC8753.jpg actually exists on the server?

    Then check the folder permissions on your /wp-contents and /uploads and year & month folders – they should be 755. Incorrect permissions can cause images to not appear.

    Did you disable right clicking on your website? Was it to try (it won’t work) to stop people downloading your images? If so, what technique did you use and could that be causing this?

    Your https://www.astridharrisson.com/wp-content/uploads/ folder doesn’t appear to have a folder for 2011 in it.

    Hi Jason, I’m in the About page using FTP but it’s taking me a while to navigate as I can only find the code version and I’m looking for a visual option.

    I did disable right clicking, yes. Yes it was to stop people downloading images although I realise “screen grab” is pretty efficient and I’m sure there are other ways beyond my comprehension!

    Thank you so much for helping – I’m going to try to resolve this this afternoon.

    Good luck!

    But it’s not the About page that you need to look at. You won’t even be able to find that using FTP, it doesn’t exist as an actual file. And there is no code or visual option: that’s how WordPress works, not FTP.

    Instead you need to use FTP to find the wp-content/uploads folder and see what’s in it.

    What you need to do is:

    – see if those folders are there or not using FTP
    – if they are, check/change their permissions (folders should be 755, files should be 644)
    – if not, look around to see if they’ve ended up somewhere else in the wrong place and if so move them to the correct location

    I think I’m in the right place and I can’t find any images… folders do say 755 except index.php which says 644. Confused…but I’ll keep looking. Very weird as I have not done any work on my website lately….

    That’s as it should be.

    Folders = 755

    Files = 644

    If the images are missing there are a few possible solutions:

    1) Have a root around and find them. Maybe the have been accidentally moved elsewhere. Move them back.

    2) Restore them from a backup. You have made backups, right? If not, time to start a new habit.

    3) Ask your web host to restore them. Assuming they made backups and are helpful.

    Your solutions are brilliant.

    1) Have a root around and find them. Maybe the have been accidentally moved elsewhere. Move them back. it appears there are no images anywhere

    2) Restore them from a backup. You have made backups, right? If not, time to start a new habit. new habit begun as of today.

    3) Ask your web host to restore them. Assuming they made backups and are helpful. luckily they are helpful and I’m contacting them for help now.

    Fingers crossed…thank you for your tips and your time. Greatly appreciated.

    The result is not pretty…my hosting company have done some digging and can’t find the files on a back up, or anywhere. It looks as though I have an enormous task ahead of me…

    I’m not sure how the files were removed, only that they’re missing. The folder where the files are located in is the wp-content/uploads folder, and you’ve got a fair amount of files that are referencing the 2014 folder in that directory, but that doesn’t seem to exist. It’s also not in our backups, which would mean that the files have been missing for a while (at least a week, since that’s our oldest backup at this time) Unfortunately this means that there’s not any direct way I can restore the files to the site, getting it to show the images again.

    Ouch. I am sorry for your loss.

    Thanks…well, there must be a silver lining somewhere. A newer, bigger, better site awaits.
