• Hello!

I followed Yoast’s directions for media attachment pages months ago. However, I didn’t download the Search Index plugin until about 2 months ago. Is it normal that NEW media attachments are still showing up as 404 errors even after implementing the first change? It doesn’t seem okay to me but I’m new to all of this.

Here’s are two examples of 404s I found in my Google search console for two different and brand new posts that were published AFTER I made sure the media attachment was toggled correctly:

    https://www.fashionedible.com/2-week-europe-itinerary/best2weekeuropeanitineraries1/

I looked through other questions in support and haven’t found anything exactly like this issue. I did see another question that support answered mentioning sitemaps and I’m wondering if mine is to blame as I have several that appear under my Yoast sitemaps. Thanks!

    Hi @gracejsilla,

The aim of the Yoast SEO: Search Index Purge plugin is to purge attachment URLs from the search index by making all of your website’s attachment URLs return an HTTP 410 (content is gone) status. Google has approved of our method to solve this issue in the fastest way possible.

That being said, Google Search Console may notify you of an increase in crawl errors. This is to be expected when a large quantity of previously indexable URLs suddenly return 410 status codes. You do not have to do anything and Google will eventually drop the attachment URLs from the search results since they don’t exist anymore.

After six months the attachment URLs (410 crawl errors) should be gone from the search results. At that time, you should remove the search index purge plugin and keep the redirect setting of the attachment URLs set to “Yes”.

Let us know if there’s anything else we can assist you with; we’re happy to help.

I did read that and I’m not worried about old photos returning an error as I know you mentioned that is normal. However, should I be worried that recent photos from brand new blog posts are being indexed? I was under the impression that new photos should not be indexed anymore after toggling the redirect setting of the attachment URLs but maybe I misunderstood. Thanks again!
