• I help work with a few sites, and on 3/4 of them have images broken. All items in the media library of the three appear as a broken image link. Some of the plugin icons on the side menu of WordPress appear broken. And even the images for changing the theme appear as broken.

At the time, two of the broken sites were upgraded to the most recent version of WordPress, and one was not. So it doesn’t make sense that it would be an update issue.

All plugins are updated and they were updated at different times yet broke at the same time. I also tried disabling all the plugins and that didn’t help resolve the issue on any of the sites.

Contacted the woman that hosts them, and she was in contact with HostGator. All media files are just fine on the server, so they’re not missing or corrupted there.

We’ve got 3 different themes running, so it’s not a theme specific issue.

The frustrating thing is that noting was done between them working and not working. Updates to two sites were done several days before the breaking, updates to the other two were done after the breaking. Nothing was done on the hosting at the time of the breaking.

And perhaps this is because I’m not adept at coding, I’ve got no idea where to even start looking next. I’ve found similar-ish issues on the multisite section, but our hosting lady took a look and said we don’t have a multisite set-up for them, so the solution there isn’t relevant for us.

The site that had the earliest updates with the Customizr theme is:
    https://nativeamericanmuseum.org
This was updated the shortly after the WP update was available

The other two that are broken were updated at different times and are running Artificer:
    https://redtailarts.com
    https://portableweirdness.ninja
Portable Weirdness was updated close to the previous site, and RTA was three days ago.

The site that has no problems with images is running Broadscope and was updated just yesterday:
    https://pagancenteredpodcast.com

    Have you tried:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
resetting the plugins folder by FTP. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Sixteen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

    Hey Tara,

Yes, ALL the plugins were temporarily deactivated, and no change happened. And I did that on all 3 of the sites that are causing issues.

Yes, I switched to a default, and nothing changed either. That’s where I got that even the images for the different themes are missing.

I’ll have to get our hosting lady to reset the plugins folder, I don’t think I’ve got the access to do that.

I tried to check out the WP Trac timeline to see if there was a ticket on broken images in 4.5.1

But i did not find any.

That suggest me this issue might be specific to your installation/server.

You may try increasing memory available for php.

Oh, and to edit. Changing the theme didn’t fix all the problems, on Red tail Arts, a handful of images decided to come back. But not all of them and not the images inside WordPress

And the Portable Weirdness, which is using the same theme as the RTA, had no photos come back and Twenty Fifteen is missing a stylesheet in the themes…for unknown reasons.

    Okay!

I’ll pass that along to our hosting chicka and let you know how it goes!
    *fingers crossed*

Having the same problem. Some images show and some don’t. Images show while editing a page, but will not show when the page is viewed. deaconsofdeadwood.org. Missing images are on the golf tournament page and in some of the sliders.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem on my blog https://www.camillatranar.com
can’t see whats wrong, and it started after the WordPress update as it seems.

    Milla,
Yours are showing up on my end. ??

    Jmckendree,
A problem I had with the nativeamericanmuseum.org site was the the theme had a limit to photo size. Photos larger than 2MB would show when editing, but not load on the page. Check and see if that’s your problem.

When I view your website you are missing photos on various pages (similar to mine.)I didn’t check every page but they are missing on Museum and Events at the Museum. Also, Back Home in the header is missing. My images are under 2MB so that’s not the problem, but I appreciate the suggestion.

Milla’s seemed to be working for me also.
    Thanks.

    @tara

Sorry it took so long, weekend for our hosing lady.

She has attempted both of those and neither clearing the plugins through the FTP or increasing memory has helped. Memory was set at 40MB, reset to 64MB and no change.

Surprised no one has mentioned this, but was a directory renamed? Or was the directory structure somehow changed? What about path settings?

If not due to a plugin conflict, missing/broken images could be due to not having the correct path to the image file.

My problem cleared up as mysteriously as it surfaced. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

    @wanderer
The directory definitely wasn’t renamed unless it did it itself. Checked with the hosting lady about the proper media path, and she said all was where it’s supposed to be. The files are there and as far as we can tell, nothing in the path settings is wrong.

I was just was given sign-in information for the hosting, so I can look at a lot of this myself.

All the images are definitely there. And they’re under the folders they’re supposed to be in, all in wp-content/uploads and separated by year and month.

Media within the uploads folder is all still there, file names all match.

Now, when I tried to get a picture to load individually, I got a 403, and not a 404. So access restricted, not missing file.

I checked the permissions and the wp-content and the uploads are under
    Read: User, Group, World
    Write: User
    Execute: User, Group, World
