Until mid/late December, WP worked normally. I regularly upload 1800×2700 jpg images (book covers).
As of the end of December, those images suddenly started uploading as filename-scaled.jpg at 1707×2560, which seems to be the maximum size that doesn’t get scaled.

Image complexity or compression doesn’t seem to matter: a solid color image is scaled, as is a JPG saved at 50% quality. An 1800×2700 png is not scaled.

I’ve tried turning off all plugins, but found no difference. This scaling happens across a whole range of sites, including on different domains (a prime domain and add-on domains with my host). All sites are running the latest WP. My hosting provider denies it has anything to do with them.

I’m beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what’s going on, and what suddenly changed. Any help appreciated.

  • WordPress 5.3 did introduce ‘scaling’ to a max of 2560 pixels. I’m certain this number was chosen as most people would not have to display an image that large. This saves load time for your site. It’s a good thing. Unless you don’t want it to do that.

Here is the Make WordPress article about the addition. There is also a way to disable it if you need to.

    Kim,

Thanks very much for this, which precisely answers my question. Because it was sudden and affected all sites, I was sure this was either WP or my hosting provider, but I didn’t see any posts about it, and the article/change you mention completely passed me by.

Thanks for easing my mind! My biggest images are just over the limit, so I’ll likely disable the feature for convenience.
