Images uploaded to multiple uploads directories

  • I’ve noticed that some of my images, which have only been used in one post, have been uploaded to multiple monthly uploads folders. For example an image that I used in a post in late 2012 also appears in 5 out of the 8 monthly folders that exist for 2013.

    Does WordPress re-upload or make duplicates of images whenever you update a post? If so, is it likely to cause any problems if I delete these duplicates? It seems a waste of disk space on my hosting. And would there be a way to prevent it doing that in the future?

    The theme I’m using is a child of TwentyTwelve if that’s relevant.
