• 231 images have been uploaded by users into the Media Library.

When I check the wp content/uploads folder I find 893 images and they are taking up 225MB! Looking at these images I can see multiple copies of the original images appear to have been created by Word Press.

    What is happening here?

  • WordPress automatically creates 3 copies each time an image is uploaded: thumbnail, medium and large. The physical dimensions of each of these copies is controlled by the settings within Admin/Settings/Media.

Is there any way WordPress can be altered to stop it creating 3 images?
Only 1 original image + thumbnail is needed 99.9% of the time.

Yes, indeed. Is there any way? It’s an awful waste of space!

    richardalan3,

Visit Settings > Media and enter a 0 in the Max Width and Max Height of the image sizes you do not want WordPress to create.

    Thanks!
