• I am setting up a second WordPress website from a webhosting account where I have another WordPress site. In my new site images won’t show up on the screen. I’ve uploaded images to the site, but neither they nor the WP theme images will appear on the site. The images have uploaded without a problem and exist in the wp-content/uploads subdirectory. But they display as blank boxes with an X in the corner. The Media Library recognizes that the images exist, but it can’t display them.

I’m running two versions of WordPress — one for each site. Is it possible this would cause the problem?

Any thoughts on what might be causing this? My other site is working fine.

  • Hi Walter Sorrells, I’m not sure why your images are not showing up (numerous things could be causing it). If you want to respond back with the URL of the WordPress blog that is not showing the images, I’d be happy to take a look further into it for you.

I actually just uninstalled the site. Going to try to take another run at it. Just as a general principal do you know if it makes more sense to run the multisite plugin and not do multiple WordPress installations in one web hosting account?

I’m familiar with WordPress multisite, but I don’t have too much experience with it to give you an answer based off experience.

I would suggest using WordPress and plugins in the manner they are expected to. For example, if this is just a one time thing, then it may be better off to use 2 installs of WordPress. If you plan however to continue pushing out many more blogs in the future, then it may be worth the time to learn a bit more about WordPress multisite.

Went ahead and reinstalled. Problem’s still there. The URL of the site is https://www.tactixarmory.com.

Check your uploads path in Settings -> Media.

One of the images that I see NOT loading is the following:

    https://tactixarmory.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/search.png

When I visit this page, I get a php error:

    https://tactixarmory.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/

If I test one of my own sites calling this url:
    /wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/

… I don’t get an error. I suspect that maybe not all of your WordPress files uploaded. I would suggest either uploading wordpress again, or comparing your current files against a working version of WordPress to see if you are missing any files.

Upload path is set to default

A lot of what WordPress does is due to your .htaccess file. For example, if an file or folder does not exist, the WordPress takes over, reads the url, and then decided what data to show the user.

For example, if you have a WordPress page at domain.com/category1/post-title, there is not actually a folder named “category1”, WordPress handles this.

The opposite is going on here, however. This is a legit file on the server, so WordPress’ code should not be executed when trying to load this file:
    https://tactixarmory.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/search.png

Can you confirm that this file actually exists on your server?
    https://tactixarmory.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/search.png

It’s also strange that when you visit that URL it adds a slash to it as in:
    https://tactixarmory.com/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/search.png/

If the file is in fact there, I suggest disabling your .htaccess file (by simply renaming it to something other than .htaccess, such as .htaccess.bak) and then checking the URL to search.png again to see if it will load for you.

Well, I thought I had. I reinstalled and uploaded a header image and it showed up fine. I diddled around a little (including changing one of the pages to a static page), refreshed the page in my browser and the header image had disappeared. Again, the image still shows up in my files, but WP somehow doesn’t recognize it. There’s a media library entry for it, but no image. If you attempt to edit the image in media library, you can see it fine. Puzzling…. Well, I’ve been wrestling with this all day and have to take my son to baseball practice. I guess I’ll dive in again this evening. I’ll drop another note here if I figure out anything that seems promising. Again, thanks for all the help.

    Hi everybody

I am also having the same problem. Has anyone found a solution?
