go up to the admin top menu and enable compatibility mode, then you can change things with the widgets (in an unusual way, but it works)

this is just an emergency solution and not elegant, until something better happens

Thanks. We followed up with the trouble shooting link and went through the process of de-activating and re-activating and discovered the culprit was one particular plug in for the two sites we were trying to solve, but thanks for your idea.

Anyway, it often seems to be a problem even without the plugins activated.

But it’s in the widget-page, -> screen options (on the top-right), check “enable accessibility mode”

if nothing else works ??
