• Hello,

I’m trying to import blog posts from an old site (a wordpress.com blog) to a newly designed site with a different domain that is self hosted. When I follow the steps outlined at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Importing_Content (i.e. from old site; tools > export, then in new site; tools > import) it doesn’t work. SOME of the posts come in, but much less than half. I have definitely ticked the ALL checkbox then went through the process. I also tried exporting individual components with the full date ranges which produced the same results (less than half the data transferred).

I have tried uploading the zip file that was created upon export but I get the following error message:
‘Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number’

Then instead, I unzipped the exported file which extracted 3 xml files. I uploaded each one to the new site and still get a partial import. Additionally, the media links still go to the old urls but I’m guessing I just need to run search and replace to fix.

The most important questions is “Why aren’t ALL of the posts and media being included in the export”? I am definitely checking the “all” checkbox when exporting.

Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The old site which I am moving from is – https://ediblefacial.com
The new site which i am moving to is – https://saritacoren.com

FYI, I have the maintenance mode enabled for the new site.

  • Hi,

From my experience sometimes hosting providers don’t offer much of PHP memory allocation to shared hosted sites, nor do they give or share any amount of resources and most time servers are oversold. So importing a big amount of posts can take a lot of resources.

That said, in your import you select the option to download media as well. If I’m right, after like few minutes you get no confirmation (ie: all done, have fun) but rather a white screen on the import page, correct?

    Thanks,
    Artur

Thanks Artur. Yes, that is exactly what is happening. However in that blank white page I’m getting an error message that says “failed to import mentions”… and nothing else.

I called the hosting company and they upgraded my PHP to the newest version. They said more memory would be allotted with the newer version, then I tried to import again with the same results. FYI, do you know how to submit a support ticket to WordPress? While the Forum is very helpful, I would like to know how to do that.

    Thanks again!

    Michee

    Hi Michele,

Not a problem, glad its sorted it self out with the PHP update giving you more allotted memory. That said, there isn’t really any support or ticket support for www.ads-software.com. www.ads-software.com is free, and WordPress.com is free. You can get more support from WordPress.com, but most of the time this forum is it. WordPress VIP now that is a different story. VIP is quite expensive.

So the bottom answer is that the WordPress community is big and we’re here to help and share our knowledge.

Hope that helps. We’re always happy to help here.

    Thank you,
    Artur
