Important notice for administrators: The WordPress Popular Posts “classic” widget is going away!

This widget has been deprecated. Please replace it with the WordPress Popular Posts block or the wpp shortcode as soon as possible.

Hi. I wanted to clarify if I understood this message correctly:

In the near future, the plugin in the classic widget display will stop working? If so, it is very sad. As your plugin is really the best for this task. And if it will not work then I will have to look for a replacement as guttenberg is terrible and I will not use it and use shortcode is the same as using another plugin as they just use shortcode from the ones I quickly looked at. Would you consider supporting classic mapping after all?

Correct. At that point the widget will stop listing popular posts. Only the WordPress Popular Posts block and the [wpp] shortcode will continue to work as usual.

Not sure I understood this. What do you mean with “classic mapping”?

Pardon my English. I meant maybe you will consider the support of the classic widget?

I’m sorry, I’d like to but I won’t provide support for it anymore (haven’t done so in years actually, I have been telling people to install the Classic Widgets plugin if they wish to continue using it ever since WordPress 5.8 and its block-based Widgets editor came out.)

WordPress’ future (and even now) are blocks. Even if I reverted my decision now there will be a point in the future where all classic widgets will simply stop working and maybe even break sites. That’s why I’m recommending everyone now to switch to either the WordPress Popular Posts block or the [wpp] shortcode.

You can keep using the classic widget if you want and not update the plugin when future versions are released (I wouldn’t recommend it though, you’d be missing on new features and fixes). Just keep in mind that it will eventually stop working when WordPress itself stops supporting it.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I can see that trend. But using blocks is not for me. If wordpress will not be able to use anything other than blocks, I will have to give up wordpress. It’s unfortunate but it can’t be helped.

I also can’t stand the block editor. Use the classic widget plugin and use the regular wordpress popular posts widget. Hector’s plugin works fine with it. The only reason I even came to this forum is because I got the same notice. I eventually rolled back Hector’s plugin to the previous version and blocked updates on it. No more Admin notice. I’ll use it until the wheels fall off. I have custom CSS for my widget area and the block deal ignored most of it and looked odd. I’m not changing my site appearance for a plugin or widget. I also use the classic editor plugin. Everything works.

I’m with obana and asdor2018. This is disappointing – blocks are a pain.
