It’s come to my attention that some sites’ menus are disappearing when updating to version 1.5.3, when menu sync is disabled.

If this happens to your site, it’s a quick fix to get the menu back:

    • Disable the sync option if not already disabled
    • Delete the menu under Appearance > menus (don’t worry, the menu will be regenerated in the next step)
    • Go back to the page listing and re-enable the sync (this will regenerate the menu)
    • Visit the Appearance > Menus page again and reassign the newly generated menu
    • You may now disable sync if desired

Thanks, and sorry for any panics this may have caused!

  • if you have a WP menu you setup through appearance and have never used menu sync the fix does not bring back your menu! well it does bring back a menu but with all pages, not your original WP menu.

    Agreed!!!

I was rushing to get a menu back up for someone after is was erased and followed these steps but this of course simply ended up adding all pages on the site into the menu. And that’s not what I bet a lot of people need to do because if you are using a WP Nav Menu you are probably adding pages and categories and custom links, etc, of your choosing.

    This worked for me.

Xavier you had a WP menu setup via appearance -> menu had nested pages installed but never used the sync option?

    Hello Nickfmc,

The only I’m using is the Nested Pages menu, and it syncs pretty well.

My site has a lot of content, and the menu is growing day by day. For this reason usually I have the sync checkbox disabled, and I enable it only when I want to refresh the menu.

so yours is a different set of variables that are causing the issue me and onetrev are seeing. We are never enabling the nested pages menu sync. when we update we loose our menu or do the workaround Kyle suggested and we get all of our pages showing up in the menu as there is no synced state for it to go back to.
