• I’m moving some posts from one wp site to another using the export/import tools.
All fine but the original publication date is being overriden on import by the datetime of the import.
I’ve done many imports before, even between these sites and this has never happened.

Any idea why this is happening or experience with it?
    No plugins involved.

  • You just the usual Tools –> Export to XML, Tools –> Import from XML to move these posts ?
Hm, ya I don’t think I’ve seen that before.

Maybe take a look at this – it will run an update on existing posts:

    Test first!

I was using a plugin to ensure feature image info is exported also, which I’ve previously used with no issues. But to test I deactivated it and tried again.

I did look at the xml and the publication date did seem to be present and correct. At least the first one.

I’ll try that plugin and check more thoroughly. Thanks.

    That’s super weird then.
There must be something else changing that date.

Did you do the import on a brand new install, with no plugins, and a default theme?
I would also scan my wp-config file just to see if there is anything going on in there.

    No it’s an existing site.
I have imported posts to it before but only when it was new, but I had plugins installed already and the theme installed and configured.

It is baffling. Never encountered this before.

    – prepare your exported files
    – install a Maintenance plugin on your prod site
    – tell your visitors you’ll be back online at HH:MM
    – delete / deactivate all your plugins (I always prefer to just zip them all up, move them to the root, delete them all, then move the zip back afterwards)
    – activate a default theme
    – see what happens

I guess before I did all this, I would install a fresh version on XAMPP first and check locally.

You have to decide if you just want to get it done, or if you actually want to investigate the root cause! Lol. ??
Most people just wanna get it done.

The export site has a lot of hits per day… I’m loathe to take it down.
What confuses me is why this is happening at all. Given the xml data looks ok I may try deactivating everything on the target site (except plugins that are involved in the import data like Yoast) switch to a default theme and import.

    Weird.

I would migrate it down to a local copy as well.
See if there is something going on on the server side.

    Will try.
I have limited time to work on this as it’s voluntary and my workload is stacked!
Thanks for the help. I hate these issues that make no sense!
