• I’m moving from hosting my own site and running wordpress to a www.ads-software.com hosting account. I’ve got my site backuped. Can I import this backup (sql file) into my new www.ads-software.com hosted page? If not directly, is there some kind of work around?

Will the directions there work for a blog hosted with wordpress.com?

samreynolds, if you’re moving info from WordPress.com, it would be via Dashboard Tools > Export > All and save XML file to your hard drive. Then you import that XML file from Dashboard of your www.ads-software.com install.
Curious, how were you able to get an SQL backup of your WP.com blog?

Mercime: Almost, but in reverse. I’m moving to WordPress.com from www.ads-software.com. I have a sql backup from www.ads-software.com that I would like to use with wordpress.com. Is this possible in any way?

You cannot import SQL into WordPress.com blog … except probably in VIP account, not the free blog. So at this time, better export XML from your www.ads-software.com site then import said XML into WordPress.com blog (don’t forget to click include attachments)

Any way I can extract stuff from the sql file into an xml file on my computer?

That’s a tough one. You’ll need an SQL guru to come up with the script and run it there using phpMyAdmin or other app to extracting XML from SQL,sorry never had to do it myself.

The other altherative is that you could install WP in your computer – many references how to
    – Upload the /uploads/ folder you backed up from your old server.
    – Open up your SQL file and make a backup of that SQL file and save to computer.
    – Open the extra copy of the SQL file and do a search and replace from https://yoursite.com/ to e.g. https://localhost/wordpress or url you use to access your wordpress in computer.
    – import the revised SQL file to your computer’s database
    – run your installation and go to dashboard > tools > export all

Yes, mercime, that way looks like pure win. Thank you!
