importing Blogger blogs into Earthlink WordPress & other basic Qs

  • Earthlink now enables the easy creation of blogs us9ing WordPress . . . from scratch. I have a few basic questions before I proceed further.

    (1) The blog that Earthlink creates ends up in a subdirectory strcutured as follows:

    https://www.domainname.org/wordpress/

    Is there a way to put it into another subdirectory?

    (2) How does one create multiple blogs on one’s site?

    (3) With multiple blogs, what would their subdirectories look like? [See (1) above.]

    (4) Earthlink is working with WordPress 2.0.4. Do I have to upgrade to the current version of WordPress to make the following work?

    (5) I want to import an existing blog content with its structure into my newly created empty WordPress blog. My blog was created with Blogger. The additional complication is that the blog has been published on my site, which means I have to follow the instructions on importing NEW BLOGGER to Word Press at:

    PLUS republish my blog on the blogger site to make the conversion work.

    I’m willing to give the conversion a shot, but I want to make sure I know what I’m doing first. So is there anything else I should know?

    (1) I don’t find the instructions on either page crystal clear, at least not for novices. Am I to understand that a separate installation for each blog means all the WordPress core files will be duplicated in the directory of each blog?

    (2) On the Moving WordPress page, there is an option to have the WordPress files in their own directory with the blog in the root directory. Does this mean that the blog cannot be placed in any other directory than the root directory?

    1) Correct. Perhaps you’d be interested in WordPress mu?

    (1) This may not be terribly necessary, as my blog sizes are small. Does Word Press Mu cost money, and does Earthlink support it?

    (2) It’s probably a moot point now, but “Nope” means that WordPress files can go in the WordPress directory and the actual blog CAN go in a subdirectory that is NOT the WORDPRESS directory and NOT in the ROOT directory?

    Anyway, I’m trying to keep it simple for now, but my problem is that I only have a home page; the archival permalink structure doesn’t exist; that is, the permalinks from the home page don’t work, as there are no files to link to.

    Earthlink is only doing 2.0.4? Sounds like them to do something broken like that. *sigh*

    5) We just had the new blogger import come down the pipe in WordPress Multiuser. They have it installed over at wordpress.com. You may want to import it and export it over there. That will get you an *.xml file that you can import at earthlink. You’ll need a plugin though since you’re only at 2.0.4.

    Handy, do you have that plugin link nearby? I’m on a locked down public term with only one browser window today.

    Are Permalinks working and supported by your host?

    I was going to ask which version of Word Press to use to follow up on these various suggestions. I’m told that earthlink supports only support WordPress 2.0.4. Does anyone know the consequences of this?

    2.0.4 supposedly had some security problems. Hard to say for sure, since every time the dev releases a new incremental it always ref’s “security problems”.

    There’s really no reason you couldn’t go ahead and have EL set up 2.0.4 and then upgrade, is there? Or don’t they allow that? Possible I suppose, which is a good reason for not ever using an ISP as a web host.

    Earthlink live help was totally useless. I got no answers to any of my questions. I should have followed up on the first question to get a more precise answer: Earthlink doesn’t SUPPORT later versions of WordPress, but does that mean they won’t work?

    My main problem now is that I can’t get the PERMALINKS TO FUNCTION.

    EarthLink’s servers do support the installation of later versions of WordPress, including the new 2.1. The link from anearthling above gives instructions on how to install that version including specific instructions for EarthLink.

    I appreciate this. But now the question is, if I go through all this, am I going to get working Permalinks?

    Not if, as with other ISP hosting conglomerates, they don’t allow you to manipulate the .htaccess file.

    Well, we have troubleshooting info over on the Permalinks page. Is Earthlink hosting on apache or IIS?

    Do they have mod_rewrite and AllowOverride on and enabled?

    Those would be places to start, I reckon.

    whoops! Just read vkaryl’s entry. Earthlink doesn’t allow .htaccess changing? That’ll kibosh pretty permalinks pretty quickly.
