• Greetings
I am attempting to import some entries from an MT blog, to a new install of WP.

I get to the initial page, when I click “let’s go”, nothing happens ,when using Mozilla.(in IE it has a “page cannot be displayed” error)

I tried searching the forums here, and also doing a google search, couldnt come up with anything.

Any ideas how I can solve this?

    Thanks

    /Dee

  • Are you do this on a hosted server or localhost ?
If it’s the latter, try the former.

    I’m sorry, a bit of a noob ??
Can you please explain what you mean.

I have webhosting if thats what you are meaning? ??

How large is the .txt file from MT ?

(What I meant above was that if you were trying to do this on your computer, try doing it on the net – which you are)

Carthik recently updated his guide on the Codex for importing from Movable Type, it may help you at least a few steps along the way:

Thanks for that last link, will have a read through ??

I have done all the things in the tutorial, its frustrating, like I am missing something.

The txt file is 984kb, the article I was reading said that size isnt really an issue until it hits around 5mb, is this still true?

I too am trying to import my import.txt file into the wp-admin folder. I’m using ftp to do this as my current domain is still pointing at my Typepad blog.

Even after uploading the import.txt file to the proper folder, when I click on “let’s go” nothing happens. Does this failure have something to do with the fact that my new WP domain is still pointing toward the Typepad blog? Isn’t there some way to work on a WP blog installation that will use the same domain as the one you’re currently using for TP, while still allowing you to configure the WP blog?

    I’m completely confused & lost!!!

@richards1052 – I’m not sure about the domains, but exactly where the import takes place doesn’t matter – I could import your MT data into WP for instance, regardless of your domain name.

@justdee – the size of file you have should be no obstacle at all.

If either of you want, you can email me your txt file and I will try to import that data into WP. Assuming success I would email back the .sql file and assist with importing and adjusting that if needed.

Podz: I don’t think the import itself or the import.txt file is my problem. I’ve succeeded in importing the file into my WP installation. My problem is that I have a domain name now pointing to my other blog at Typepad. And I’ve set up my webhost acct. using that domain name (since once my WP site is up & running I will point my domain back to my WP blog) which has hard-wired that URL into my WP installation.

But since the domain isn’t pointing now to the WP site, I have no access to the admin panel in WP & can’t do anything with my WP site.

What I need is to find a way to get WP to accept the current URL for my blog: https://70.96.188.22/~richard2/ . But I also need a way to switch that URL back to my domain name when I’m ready to switch fr. Typepapd to WP.

If I point my domain away fr. my TP blog & to my new WP blog then essentially my current blog will be displaying to the public in a messed up way until I get all the bugs ironed out. I’d prefer not to do this unless I have to (& I guess I may have to).

I am having the exact same problem that JustDee described. Nothing happens in Mozilla, “Page Cannot Be Displayed” in IE. My import.txt is 4.1 MB.

Please help! I have spent hours customizing my new WP templates, only to be thwarted at the import…

In case anyone is interested, I finally figured out the problem. The import.txt file was too big. No error mesages at all were given, however. The import script just quit.

I managed to import my MT entries by breaking import.txt into chunks. I started with one entry, and imported successively larger chunks. I reached the size limit with the largest chunk the end; it looks like I can’t import files bigger than about 600-800k on my server.

    I hope this helps someone.

I have what I think is a new problem. I read the codex from here: (https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Importing_from_Movable_Type_to_WordPress)
and here: (https://www.ads-software.com/docs/tutorials/import-mt/) before starting to import from an mt blog ( mt version 2.661)

The export seems to have gone ok from the mt side of things and I successfuly sftp-ed the import.txt file into my wordpress blog’s wp-admin folder (after making the neccessary changes to the import php script). But when I ran the import script instead of getting a “Let’s go” link, I get a blank screen.

The export was done through firefox. The file size was 391kb (and I even cut it into 8 smaller bits and that produced the same results but thanks for the idea jpadsen!).

When I go to run my import-mt.php script in firefox I get a completely blank screen without any “Let’s Go” button

    Has anyone got any advice?

Have you tried deleting the import-mt file and reuploading another ?

    Hey podz.

I have. Both the complete file and that same file broken down into smaller pieces.

The file size I doubt is the problem.
What about seeing if someone else can import it for you and send you the sql ?

    Hey Podz,
The problem has been resolved. After fiddling around, I figured out that it was just a dumb typo in the define export which I stupidly overlooked.

I needed a fresh pair of eyes to look at it. Very foolish!

    Sorry for wasting your time.
