I have a big typepad blog, something like 1300 posts. My WordPress installation is up and running, and now I want to import my Typepad posts.

There’s a nice article in this forum about importing from Moveable Type, and apparently it also works with Typepad. But the instructions are all WRONG.

First, it says to edit import-mt.php. Well, that file doesn’t exist in WP 2.0.3. I found mt.php in the “import” subdirectory, but the items I’m supposed to edit are not there.

Other stuff I looked at involved complicated database changes that I can’t even begin to comprehend. I tried simply importing the huge HTML file I pulled out of Typepad into WP via the Import/Moveable Type screen, but it chokes and says it can’t import the file.

HELP! I really want to get off of Typepad! How do I do this?

I’m no expert in this stuff.

So… am I the only person who can’t import my Typepad blog? Is there some other way to get help on this?

I hadn’t seen that until just now, but I don’t think it will help. That seems to be a fix for WP doing a bad job of importing. My problem is that it won’t import at all.

When I try to import (i.e., upload the file) it grinds away for about two minutes and then comes back with this error message:
“The uploaded file could not be moved to .”

What does that mean? And does it mean the file is in place, but not moved to … some unnamed place?

Might have been useful to have included that in your original post. Perhaps there’s a permissions issue? Is your wp-content/uploads writable by your web server?

Hmmm. There is no wp-content/uploads. The only things in the wp-content directory are the “plugins” and “themes” folders, and the index.php file.

Is there supposed to be another folder? It’s not in the unzipped installation zip.

It tends to get created as needed, I believe. For instance, if you use the image uploader, it’ll get created.

For grins, you might create a a wp-content/uploads and ensure that your web service process can write there and see what happens.

Thanks for the tip. Tried it. No grins. (Didn’t work.)

Also, I just tried to upload a file through the upload thingy on the “write post” page. While it will save and display text that I write, when I tried to upload an image I got the exact same error message.

Methinks it might be a permissions problem, but it looks like the folders all have write permission. I’m pretty rusty on permissions stuff, but the wp-content folder is drwxr-sr-x (all three wp- folders have those permissions).

    Is that correct?

Change wp-content/ to 777. Same with any subdirectory that WP (or any plugins) needs to create files in…

    Test again and report back?

    Holy crap, it worked! Thanks!

I ended up 777ing a whole bunch of stuff, but I assume that’s not very wise, so I should change it back. Is 745 the suggested setting for all the folders?

I suppose I have an awful lot of tweaking to do now too. It looks like my images didn’t all come in right (they’re floating over the text). Grrrr!

Final note: it turns out the images came in just fine. So did all comments. It’s working brilliantly! Thanks everybody!

Minor point: 755 for folders, 644 for files….
