importing Movable Type via PhpMyAdmin

  • I’m trying to help a friend who has a MT blog move over to WP. The problem is, she had trouble with her host, and they shut down her access to the MT admin side of her blog. The blog itself, posts and all, still show up, but there is no way to log in to export her posts. Is there a way to do this via PhpMyAdmin? We do have access to both this and her Cpanel. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • that depends, is she aqctually using mysql with MT or is she just doing the filesytem saving.

    if its the former, you can grab a backup of her old site through phpmyadmin. You wont, however, be able to just import that info, straight away, into anything having to do with a new wordpress install.

    Yes, I managed to get a backup of her site. But I can’t for the life of me figure out how to import it into WP. Is there any way that you know of to do so?

    did you even read what I wrote. I said that you cant import it. Theyre not compatible.

    here is ONE thing you could do:

    set up a dummy MT install. somewhere you have access. Import that sql dump into the MT install.

    Then go through whatever steps with that MT install you need to, so that you can use wordpress’ built-in MT importer.

    Assuming you have enough posts to make going through that worthwhile. Copy and paste might be a better alternative, if you dont know what you are doing also.
