• I exported my wordpress blog from one installation, then imported it to a new one on a new host. All the content is there (posts and pages are available in the admin area), but it doesn’t look the same (type in my url and get a “this site is under development” notice.

How do I get rid of that? And it doesn’t look like my theme imported. Do I have to set that up all over again?

    Please help.
    Thank you!

  • at a guess, your new host has a placeholder page you need to delete – like index.html
this will allow wordpress’ index.php to work

you will have to set your theme and plugins up again as they do not export/import from the dashboard

is there a way to get my theme and plugins back with a backup file?

And I think you’re right about the other thing, there’s a home.html I’m going to go try to delete.
    Thanks for your quick response!

Yes, thank you, the first/main problem is fixed. I needed to both delete the home.html and ADD my param.xml file, now I can see my blog.

BUT I really thought I would get my whole theme back with all the customizations and widget items back with the export or backup or something. I have a clone of the whole FTP folder on my desktop, can I get it back from there?

I moved over the theme folder, but that’s still generic, no widgets.
    Thanks again!

since you didn’t do a database back up / import, you don’t have any theme settings stored, so you will need to recreate it

All you will need to do go in widgets and drag the ones you were using.
you can uplaod your plugins from your desk top in wp-contents/plugins folder and activate them from admin panel.

Hmmm, but I did do a database backup as well. The export/import feature just seemed easy. (and the documentation didn’t say that I would lose anything)

So is it too late to use the the database backup? And would that involve going into the sql database? (I’m not very good at that!)

I just remembered I still have my blog running on the old host in the blog folder, so at least I can go back and forth and look at it to recreate all my customization.

Guess I’m all set then, thanks for your help Samuel!

oh, govpatel, thanks! we posted simulaneously.

Yes, that’s how I’ll have to recreate my widgets, but I would still need the content from the widgets such as text/html. But I got it now from my old install.

got the plugins, now I’ll go activate them. Thanks!
