Improve User Registration / Custom Profiles

Cozmo Labs provides a great overview on how to to use WP hooks to create a custom user registration screen and login on the front-end, without having to expose users to the backend (wp-login.php). There could be any number of reasons why this should be doable by default or as a plugin option.
Can this be made an official add-on to improve usability for multi-user websites?
