    Hey everyone, Michael Murdock here.

I started a new blog because I wanted to work on my internet journalism skills and because i’m passionate about the subject. You can see my site at thepowercosmicblog.com

I started the blog on wordpress.com but to get new widgets and such I needed to have my site hosted it seems, so I hosted my site on dreamhost. However, I can’t upload new widgets and plugins, and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do with my dreamhost stuff. All I know is between hosting and getting a domain name I’ve spent almost a hundred dollars and I don’t even know ow to do something as simple as have a background image on my blog! I’m super, super lost and I’d appreciate some help. The plugin I’m TRYING to use is:

    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/simple-full-screen-background-image/

Also, what’s the difference between wordpress.com and www.ads-software.com? Can I transfer my blog over to the .org site if that’s necessary to use plugins? I really don’t know what I’m doing and I’ve spent so much time trying to figure it out. I’m just so not tech savvy ??

If you are using WordPress.com & have paid for hosting with dreamhost, it sounds like you are paying for hosting that you are not making use of.

You will need www.ads-software.com to be able to install plugins.

It is possible to export your existing site and install it as a self-hosted WordPress site. https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

The difference between WordPress.com & www.ads-software.com is explained at https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Thanks, I feel like I understand what is going on a little better now, but I’m still missing something big. I made an account name on www.ads-software.com and I’m trying to log into a blog, even just a blank one, and I don’t know how. Just something I can transfer my wordpress.com blog into. But I don’t see anything on the homepage about starting a new blog, and I don’t know where to look on dreamhost if that’s where I need to go. I think I just need a blank www.ads-software.com blog to transfer into, but I don’t know how to get that.

www.ads-software.com does not host any blogs – It is where you download the WordPress software to install on your own hosting. Logging in here enables you to post to the forum, but it will not set up a blog for you to use.

You need to install WordPress on your dreamhost hosting. There appear to be several tutorials online both text & video that cover your hosting company’s one-click WordPress installation. I’m sure you should be able to find a suitable one via a google search. Also your hosting company should have documentation & support resources to provide help specific to their environment.

I prefer to install manually so I never use one-click installs. Instructions for manually installing WordPress are at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress. For this option you would need to get up to speed with things such as setting up a database and using ftp, but again your hosting company should be able to offer specific support for this.

Another option would be to hire someone to provide one-to-one support and/or install & set up for you. To find someone for this you could look for a local WordPress consultant/developer or post a job at https://jobs.wordpress.net & work with someone remotely.
