In Over my Head? (Theme Authoring)

I’m trying to make a custom theme for my website using wordpress in order to speed up updating and add commenting, etc. I followed a few tutorials, but I can’t seem to get it right.

I want it to look like this, but currently I can’t change it from looking like this.
