Inactive WordPress Installations

  • Hi.

    I’ve a few inactive wordpress installations on my hosting account.

    Do they continue to take up system resources? Or do they just stay dormant?

    I am thinking of whether to remove them

  • They take up physical disk space in the form of file and database sizes, but if they can’t be accessed from the web, you probably shouldn’t see any activity. If they’re old, insecure versions, and you won’t be using or updating them, you might consider removing the files – especially if they’re on a shared server.

    Does that mean no crop jobs will run?

    I am only concerned about ram/processor usage.

    You may want to check the Doc’s just to be sure, but I don’t think wp-cron actually runs until the site is accessed, so rather than running on a schedule like a unix cron job, it waits until it’s called. At least I think that’s how it works.

    [edit] “waits until it’s called” – might be a very poor description – I think it might be more accurate to say that when a page loads, it checks to see if there are scheduled jobs to run..
